Meet Lindsay of Brin and Bell
Meet Lindsay, mother to four, designer and creator of Brin & Bell handmade jewelry. I spotted this awesome company and instantly loved what she had to offer! Get to know the mama behind Brin & Bell and then go check out all the goodness in her shop!
Tell us a Little about yourself, your family and your business.
I live in Utah. I have been married to my love for 14 years! I am a busy mom to four beautiful kids 12, 10, 8 and 4. We run around from sporting events and dance lessons...and life is always crazy! I love Dr Pepper, chocolate covered cinnamon bears, University of Utah football, trashy tv, traveling, working out, cooking, fashion, and above all being with my husband and kids. Brin & Bell was established in 2009 as a suggestion from some friends because of my love of jewelry and pretty things. Funny story, is when I was 8 I broke both of my arms, so I had a cast on them. My mom and I were about to leave the house and I told her to wait for me, I ran downstairs to get some jewelry (((FOR WHAT REASON??? I couldn't wear bracelets on my casts!!!))), and tripped and sprained my ankle...I think my love for jewelry started then! I have been diagnosed with depression, anxiety and PTSD. My business has been a way to cope. And has helped calm my brain. Making things for other people, that I know they are going to love, and that will mean something to me, keeps me going!
What did you do before starting Brin and Bell?
I had a food blog! My husband and I taught cooking classes, and even went on a local tv show a few times!
How did you come up with your company name and why?
My girls names are Brinley and Bella. I wanted to incorporate their names into the shop, and so I had all of my friends and family come up with a vote, and Brin & Bell won!
What inspired you to start your own business and how did you start it?
I have always been a crafty person! I would make jewelry for friends as gifts, and my friends all said I should start selling it...so I figured, why not give it a try?!? So I signed up on Etsy, and the rest is history!
Is there a specific tool you use that makes managing a business easier?
Really...I don't keep a lot of written notes...but I do store EVERYTHING on my phone!! The note feature is filled with so many ideas and to do's!
What Were some of the learning curves of just starting out?
You have to believe in your self, and your product or it isn't going to work. If you want to succeed, you have to be willing to put in the time and effort! AND DON'T GIVE UP!!!!
What's it like being a business owner and mom, how do you schedule both?
Well I think it takes a lot of patience. My kids are patient with me, I am patient with them, and I just have to hope that my customers are patient with all of us! This isn't a Large business (like Target). I am a mom, working late nights while my kids are in bed, or while they are at school. I am answering emails, or messages while I am in line at carpools, or chickfila. But most importantly, I try to be present in whatever it is I am doing. If it is time to work, I give it my all. If it is mom time, I am all there. My kids are growing to fast, and so I have to be as present for them as I can.
What has been your greatest lesson in business and motherhood?
To take a deep breath and be patient. As much as I wish my house was always picture perfect, or my kids looked put together, it isn't going to happen. So just be patient and take whatever comes your way!
Do you have any advice for aspiring entrepreneurs?
Never give up!!! If you want something bad enough, it will happen! Just keep trying. Believe in yourself!!!!
What does a “normal” day in your home look like?
Oh goodness....that is a hard one! My normal is a little crazy. My kids are very involved with sports and dance. So the second the bell rings from school, I am shuttling the kids from football or basketball, dance, gymnastics or volleyball. We are jamming to music and having our "catch up" chats in the car. But we have family dinner every night. There is something so important about sitting down together as a family. Because it all ends and begins with family.
Besides business and your family, do you have any hobbies you love to enjoy (when you have the time)?
I love to read, a good cheesy romance novel. I also enjoy working out--high fitness and yoga are my favorite types. I love to bake and cook, and so we love having people over! I love sports (though I am not athletic at all, I love to watch them), and reality tv. And nothing beats just sitting out on the porch watching the sun rise or set!
I’m a huge coffee lover, and I'm always looking for new types, do you have a particular favorite? Don't drink coffee? Perhaps tea, juices, or any other type of beverage?
I don't drink coffee---but give me a Dr. Pepper with crunchy ice and I will love you forever!!!
Who has been an inspiration to you in your life and why?
I have so many people that are inspiring to me. But my biggest inspiration is my parents. They gave us kids everything and taught us how important it is to love, be kind and keep trying.
If you could travel anywhere or do anything in the world what would that be?
I love to travel! My dream would to visit all 50 states and at least one country on every continent.
If your children learn one thing from you what would you wish that to be?
To always be kind. No matter what happens in life, be the bigger person and just be NICE!!!
