Tell us a Little about yourself, your family and your business.
Our Beddy's offices are located in West Jordan, Utah. Beddy's is a one piece unit for your bed. They are perfect for all beds but especially hard to make beds like bunk beds, trundle beds and day beds. We have over 20 styles of beds with matching pillow sets, blankets, and bed skirts.
What did you do before starting your own business?
I stayed at home with my kids. When my youngest started kindergarten I went back to school part time at the U of U.
How did you come up with your company name and why?
Beddy's is a play on the words "Bed-ease". We've kind of adopted the following saying: "making your BED with EASE, one zip at a time".
What inspired you to start your own business and how did you start it?
Betsy is the one who first thought of the concept. She told me about it years ago when we first started running together. She made the first prototype with her Mom and then decided to try and make them. She asked me to join her and together we came up with the final design that we're selling today. We were just able to get a full utility and design patent in October of last year.
Is there a specific tool you use that makes managing a business easier?
We just started using Shopify for our website. We love it because it's so easy to use and the customer support is great (which we use ALL of the time). Without my calendar, I would be lost! I don't usually look too far ahead on my schedule and I forget everything that I don't write down so my calendar helps me to stay on track day by day.
What were some of the learning curves of just starting out?
Since I had never started my own business or had any schooling in business I was about as new as a person could get when we started Beddy's. I googled everything and relied on people to help me out. The biggest learning curve was finding a manufacturer and learning how to negotiate pricing and terms. In the beginning I didn't realize that I could push back and negotiate things like that. Now we ask questions and push back more where we can.
What's it like being a business owner and mom, how do you schedule both?
It's the hardest thing! I just got back from a 10 day business trip and missed my family like crazy. I also missed the first day of school for 2 of my kids which was hard. Since hiring our 3 employees it's been a lot easier to manage my time and not work as much in the evening. Things always come up and when they do my family is very understanding. My kids are older too so they are more self-sufficient and can help around the house.
What has been your greatest lesson in business and motherhood?
I've learned to help others and accept help when I need it. We've had so many people give us help without any expectations of getting something in return. We've tried to offer the same help to others because it's meant so much to us.
Do you have any advice for aspiring entrepreneurs and mothers?
Work hard. It takes a lot of time and effort but hard work will accomplish so much. If I had let my lack of experience and education hold me back I wouldn't be where I am. I would also say to not be afraid of leaving your comfort zone. I've grown so much and it's because I'm doing something I never thought I was capable of.
What does a “normal” day in your home look like?
I get up around 5:30 so that I can exercise (with Betsy, of course). I like to leave early so that I'm home when the kids leave for school. Things get super busy in the afternoon when everyone comes home. We're always running around to different activities before dinner. After dinner is slows down and we enjoy watching tv or playing with our new puppy.
Besides business and your family, do you have any hobbies you love to enjoy (when you have the time)?
I love to read a good book. I've always been a reader because it's my escape. I also love to go to movies and go out to dinner. We love to go places with our trailer as a family. We don't take it out more than a couple times in the summer but we love it when we do.
I’m a huge coffee lover, and I'm always looking for new types, do you have a particular favorite? don't drink coffee? Perhaps tea, juices, or any other type of beverage
I actually am recently addicted to Diet Dr. Pepper with sugar-free coconut syrup. It's such a yummy treat to me.
Who has been an inspiration to you in your life and why?
I really can't think of someone in particular. I have always been surrounded by good people who have shaped me throughout my life. I have great parents, siblings, and friends!
If you could travel anywhere or do anything in the world what would that be?
Europe! I'm already trying to plan a trip to Italy, France, and England for my anniversary next spring.
If your children learn one thing from you what would you wish that to be?
That hard work will get you almost anywhere. I think the thing that has held me back is that I thought I wasn't smart enough to do certain things. I've learned that by working hard I can accomplish so much more than I thought I could.
Any other comments or advice you would like to share?
Work hard! (did I mention that?) :) I feel strongly about it because it's something that everyone can do.
