Tell us a Little about yourself, your family and your business.
My husband, little boy, and I live in Southern California where I own a boutique children's swim label called minnow.
What did you do before starting Minnow Swim?
After studying journalism in college, I made the move to New York to start my career at Elle Magazine, and went on to work for companies such as Harvey Faircloth, Kate Spade, TT Collection, Guess? Inc. and Bugaboo. After having my first baby, I began consulting for Bugaboo, Freshly Picked, Storq and other premium brands to all a more flexible work scenario as a mother. This spring, I recently launched my own children's swim label - minnow.
How did you come up with your company name and why?
Since the word/meaning of minnow speaks for itself , I wanted the branding to be clean and modern and not overly cutesie. A little-unexpected element. Also, from a typography standpoint, I loved the look of the M, and N's and W in a simple one word.
What inspired you to start your own business and how did you start it?
In my career, I've helped build other brands that I am passionate about/believe in -- but always dreamed of creating and designing something of my own. I felt there was such a lack of good swim options for my baby boy, (which was a high part of our lifestyle) that I felt inspired to create my own.
Is there a specific tool you use that makes managing a business easier?
What Were some of the learning curves of just starting out?
I have a long list! Since my background is in marketing, production and manufacturing was all new territory to me! Lots of hurdles, but it made me even more passionate about the product and the labor of love that has gone into creating it.
What's it like being a business owner and mom, how do you schedule both?
I think everyone has to find what works best for them. I originally thought I could just bounce a baby on my hip and answer emails -- I quickly realized that I was slacking trying to do both simultaneously. So, I schedule a part time childcare so that when I am working I can focus in and when I am with my son and I am all there enjoying my time with him.
What has been your greatest lesson in business and motherhood?
Flexibility :) Nap times don't go as planned, babysitters don't show and you just have to be easy on yourself and go with it.
Do you have any advice for aspiring entrepreneurs?
Surround yourself with a great support group, because some days you may ask yourself what you are doing? And they are there inspiring you + cheering you on.
What does a “normal” day in your home look like?
Pretty normal, swim lessons + nap times.
Besides business and your family, do you have any hobbies you love to enjoy (when you have the time)?
Bike rides, beach days, and any excuse to travel.
Who has been an inspiration to you in your life and why?
My grandmother - she is the most authentic person I know.
If you could travel anywhere or do anything in the world what would that be?
I would love to live abroad with my family. We did a house exchange last summer in London, it only made me want to stay longer.
If your children learn one thing from you what would you wish that to be?
To love and enjoy this life.
